Prof. dr hab. Jacek Woźny

Jacek Woźny graduated in Archaeology from the Nicolaus Copernicus University (UMK) in Toruń in 1987. In the course of his academic career, he obtained the PhD degree in 1984, the postdoctoral degree (habilitation) in 2000, both at the Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM) in Poznań, and subsequently the title of Professor in Humanities in the field of Archaeology at the University of Wrocław (UWr) in 2009. He completed a two-year MBA study in Gdansk (2012-2014), co-organised by the University of Northampton. In 2017, he was awarded the Title of Honorary Professor of the University of Uralsk (Kazakhstan). His scholarly activity focuses on the archaeology of prehistoric beliefs and religions, theory and methodology of archaeology, archaeology of the Polish lands and the protection of cultural heritage. He has been employed at the Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz, where he subsequently has held the positions of Vice-Dean, Dean, Vice-Chancellor and currently Rector of the University. He chaired the Council of the Regional Museum in Bydgoszcz. He is also a member of the Provincial Council for the Protection of Monuments in Toruń,  as well as the IT Infrastructure Committee of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland (CRASP).

He is the author and editor of 20 monographs and 180 scientific articles. He has published, among others, such books as “Symbolika wody w pradziejach Polski” (1996), “Symbolika przestrzeni miejsc grzebalnych w czasach ciałopalenia zwłok na ziemiach polskich” (2000), “Czerwona ochra i ziarna zbóż. Symbolika odrodzenia zmarłych w obrzędach pogrzebowych kultur archaicznych międzymorza bałtycko-pontyjskiego” (2005), “Archeologia kamieni symbolicznych. Od skały macierzystej do dziedzictwa przodków” (2014) and “Archeologia i społeczeństwo” (2017). He has promoted and reviewed numerous doctoral theses, habilitation proceedings and applications for the title of Professor. He has prepared a number of publishing reviews and opinions in competitions of the National Programme for the Development of the Humanities (NPRH). He has participated in numerous national and international scientific conferences. He has been honoured, among others, with the Silver Cross of Merit and the Medal of the National Education Commission (KEN).
